The 490 Years of prophecy of Daniel 9

When we think Apocalyptic Literature we think Daniel and Revelation. Through this series we have been seeking to break down exactly what apocalypse they were referring to. As we have previously mentioned the common majority of people within the western church just assume the bible teaches that in the end times their will be a tribulation, an antichrist, a mark of the beast, and a sudden disappearance type rapture. This doom and gloom type thinking actually isn’t really in the Bible or at least you may have to use quite a bit of imagination to see the scriptures saying something like this. In fact this thinking didn’t even really start until the 1800’s and is largely limited to a western culture. Those who think this way are called escapists or futurists.
As this series has shown, most of the book of Daniel was referring to the eminent destruction of the temple in 70AD and most of the reference that are linked to the book of Revelation also refer to that era. In fact you would be hard to pressed in scripture to find any prophecy in Daniel or revelation about “end times” other than the simple fact that the Messiah is coming back some day and no one knows the time or the hour.
This series has broken down every part of the futurist form of thinking and has sought to bring light to it. We have looked at the Olivet Discourse, the apocalyptic language, how all the covenants in the Bible describe this unfolding, the anti-Christ language, the beasts, the mark of the beasts, the temple and sacred land and space thinking. All of these things strongly describe the ending of the Old Era tied to the covenants and the beginning of the new Era.
Many people think that the numbers in the Bible have a secret code of some sort that points to the antichrist, or the year of the end times, or that there is some checklist of things that would need to happen before the Messiah will come back. As we have alluded to in earlier films we simply don’t see that in scripture. Many believe the bible has numbers that describe when certain things will take place and I believe that that. In the old testament the numbers are extremely precise describing and leading up to the Messiah. However in the new Testament we don’t see this. Many try to show this and you may remember when they said Christ was coming back in 2017. Although Jesus told us that no one knows when He will return (Matthew 24:36–44), some people insisted on making predictions concerning the timing of the rapture and/or the second coming. One theory was that Jesus would return in 2017, based on the idea that 2017 was a Jubilee Year and His return would fulfill a medieval rabbi’s prophecy.
The fact of the matter is that the prophecy of numbers in Daniel foretold the coming of the messiah and the ending of the era and that’s it. Whenever someone tries to make it go past this era the numbers don’t add up. It doesn’t work. You see in the Old Testamant these numbers are incredibly precise. Literally down to the hour. However when people attempt to do the same number crunching in the new testament its based on not something concrete like we have leading up to the messiah but a lot of vague symbols trying to come up with numbers and very vague information. Hermeneutically it simply doesn’t work. Why is God so incredibly detailed in the OT with the first coming of the Messiah and not in the New Testament? I wish I knew the Answer to that; but I do know that God’s character doesn’t change and is consistent. When he does give us numbers to point to a date they are specific. When he doesn’t give us numbers it isn’t because he wants to play games with us to decipher some secret code. God has never worked this way before and we don’t see this idea or pattern anywhere in Scripture.
So let me share with you how the Bible is very specific in the OT with the coming of the Messiah and the end of the Era, and how it isn’t that way with the second coming.
We first have to look at Daniel. He is the key to the prophecy of the Messiah. There were many references prophetically to a coming Messiah throughout the OT. It is all over the pages, in fact nearly every book has something tied in here; but Daniel is the one with specific numbers.
Why Daniel? Well Daniel was the remnant. Remember we talked about this in the covenant video. Through the Israel Diaspora he was one of the few that remained faithful. He was in charge of all of the wisest men of the empire, the Magi. Remember later they knew of the coming time of the birth of the messiah. He gets the vision and records and shares this with those we are the remnant… those who believe.
