Mahadasas or dasas are Planetary or Sign periods when a planet or sign becomes the focus of your life. Vimshottari is the most popular of dasas and you can use this the predict events pretty accurately. With the sign based ones, you can see which house is activated and that in turn activates the lord of the sign and any planets sitting in that sign. I normally use up to 5 dasas in readings to ensure there is a theme. There are many planetary and sign based dasas. I use Vimshottari, Yogini, Narayana, Chara and Kalachakra.
