Astrology is a divine science offered down through the Vedas. According to the Sanathana Dharma principles the Vedas are a vast body of knowledge that covers every aspect of human life from science, technology, sociology, politics, economics, medicine, etc.,

In this video titled, "Importance of Vedic Astrology", Dr. K. Balasubramaniam shares his broad experience on the 3 most popular approaches to Astrology:
1. Chinese Astrology
2. Western Astrology (Zodiacs)
3. Vedic Astrology (Hindu Astrology or Indian Astrology)

Chinese Astrology generalizes characteristics of persons born within a year. Late January or early February is when the Chinese New Year falls each year. China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand celebrate the Chinese New Year with pomp and splendor. Every Chinese year is named after an animal. For example, the Chinese consider people born in the Dragon year are really special. The short list of Dragon years are: 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024...

Western Astrology (Zodiac signs) are based on Sun sign. According to the principles of Astrology the Sun transits through each sign every month. Every year the Sun transits through Libra from Sep 24 to Oct 23. Western Astrology tends to generalize people born in a month with certain characteristics. This is less general than the Chinese Astrology, but still a more general approach than the Vedic Astrology.

Vedic Astrology (Hindu Astrology or Indian Astrology) also known as Moon sign astrology. Vedic Astrology is an ancient science. Vedic Astrology divides 12 signs into 27 stars. The Moon transits through all the 12 zodiac signs in 27 days. This corresponds to the 27 constellations considered in Vedic Astrology. Each star is divided into 4 equal divisions.
Therefore each sign will have 9 stellar divisions. The Moon transits through each of the zodiac sign every 2.25 days. Vedic Astrology has the least generalization of the three most popular schools of astrology.

Vedic Astrology propounds a person manifests certain psycho physical nature based on the Moon in one's horoscope. Vedic Astrology further divides each day into 12 signs. The time duration of each sign depends on the time of the year, sun rise, day duration, etc. The sign rising in the east during one's birth is the ascendant (lagna/lagnam).

Vedic astrology studies one's horoscope based on one's ascendant (lagna), Moon sign (Rasi), and one's birth constellation (nakshatra). We strongly recommend that you systematically study Vedic Astrology to get into the depth of this science. Many western researchers take sabbatical from work to learn Vedic Astrology to help themselves with important life-time decisions and guide others using this science.
